About Problem Gambling
For the majority of people who go to the casino, racetrack, bingo hall, play keno or lottery tickets, gaming is a form of fun and entertainment. However for a small percentage of those who get involved, it can become more than a social experience.
For some the "action" of gambling provides a feeling of intense excitement, power and hopeful anticipation. The gambler becomes dependent upon "action" in the same way they might become dependent on the effects of alcohol or drugs. For them gambling becomes compulsive, and loss of control of gambling leads to mounting personal and family problems. Research consistently concludes that between 2% and 5% of those who gamble are problem gamblers.
